Jewellery Care Guide: How to Protect Your Gems and Make Them Last a Lifetime
Jewellery lasts longer when you care for it properly. A professional clean will make your Corky pieces look brand new and also make them last longer.
Emeralds lose their shine in hot water, opals can crack from vibration, and even diamonds scratch each other if stored together. Most gemstone damage happens slowly through daily habits: steam, sunlight, or neglect. With a few simple changes, you can preserve the colour, clarity, and structure of your Corky Saint Clair jewellery for decades.
1. Don’t shower with emerald jewellery
Emeralds are commonly treated with oils that protect their surface. Hot water and soap strip these oils, making the stone appear dull and brittle. Always remove emerald jewellery before bathing or washing your hands.
2. Keep opals out of ultrasonic cleaners
Opals are porous and sensitive to heat and sound vibrations. Ultrasonic cleaning can cause internal cracks or make the stone lose its fire. Use a soft, damp cloth instead to restore their natural lustre.
3. Store diamonds separately
Diamonds are the hardest gemstone, but they still scratch each other. Even light contact can leave micro-abrasions that reduce brilliance. Use a lined jewellery box or soft pouch for each diamond piece.
4. Avoid abrasive cleaners and harsh chemicals
Strong cleaners and rough brushes can damage both gemstones and metal. They remove polish and create tiny scratches on the surface. Always clean jewellery with mild soap, warm water, and a soft cloth. No toothbrushes!
5. Check your gemstone settings regularly
Loose prongs or worn claws increase the risk of losing stones.
We can check your ring claws and see how the setting is going when you get your ring cleaned. We recommend getting your ring cleaned with us at least twice a year. We offer this for free and it can be done on the spot. Please text on the day before you arrive.
Preventive care is far cheaper than gemstone replacement. Check for loose prongs or wobbly stones every few months. A quick inspection can prevent loss or further damage. Have a jeweller tighten or rebuild settings when necessary.
6. Don’t store jewellery in the bathroom
Bathrooms trap moisture, which accelerates tarnish and damages adhesives used in certain settings. Keep your jewellery in a cool, dry drawer or a fabric lined box away from steam and humidity.
7. Protect gems from direct sunlight
UV exposure can fade stones such as aquamarine, amethyst, and quartz. Store them in shaded conditions to preserve colour and clarity. Light proof boxes or lined cases are best for long-term storage.
