3 Places You Should Never Wear Your Jewellery

3 PLACES YOU SHOULD NEVER WEAR YOUR JEWELLERY

Fine jewellery is designed to last for generations, but daily wear still takes a toll. Scratches, bent bands, loose settings and broken chains often result from ordinary habits rather than major accidents.

Good jewellery care starts with knowing when to take your pieces off. These are three places where you should never wear your jewellery.

1. The gym

Remove your rings before lifting weights or using gym equipment.

Metal bars and handles place intense pressure on a ring. This pressure often scratches the surface, dents the metal or pushes a round band out of shape. A distorted band also places stress on the setting and increases the risk of a gemstone becoming loose.

Exercise equipment poses problems for bracelets, necklaces and earrings as well. Chains catch on clothing or machines, while sweat, chalk, sunscreen and grime collect around clasps and beneath gemstone settings.

Store each piece separately before training. A small lined jewellery case protects your jewellery better than a loose pocket inside your gym bag.

2. The shower

Showering in jewellery will not make diamonds or sapphires dissolve, but soap, shampoo and conditioner leave residue across their surfaces. This film reduces their sparkle and gathers beneath settings, where cleaning becomes more difficult.

Warm water also makes fingers slippery. Rings are easily dropped while washing your hair or body, sometimes disappearing down a drain.

Chains, earrings and claws catch on hair, towels and shower fittings. Repeated pulling weakens delicate links and loosens gemstone settings over time.

Remove your jewellery before entering the shower. You will keep your gemstones brighter and reduce the need for frequent professional cleaning.

3. Bed

Jewellery continues to experience wear while you sleep.

Fine chains twist around the neck, delicate links stretch and clasps press against the skin. Earrings catch on pillows and bedding. Ring claws snag on sheets, gradually wearing down or pulling away from the gemstone.

Sleeping in jewellery also traps body oils, perspiration and skincare products around stones and settings. Hand cream is a common cause of cloudy-looking diamonds.

Place your jewellery in a lined box or dish before bed. Keep each piece separate to prevent chains from tangling and gemstones from scratching neighbouring pieces.

How to protect your jewellery every day

Follow one simple rule: jewellery should be the last thing you put on and the first thing you take off.

Apply skincare, perfume and hair products before putting on your jewellery. Remove your pieces before exercising, showering or sleeping. Store them separately in a dry, lined jewellery box.

These small habits help preserve the finish, protect gemstone settings and keep your jewellery looking beautiful for longer.

If your ring feels misshapen, a stone starts moving or a claw catches on fabric, stop wearing the piece and arrange a professional inspection. Early attention often prevents a minor repair from becoming a lost gemstone.
