What You’re Actually Paying for When You Buy a Custom Engagement Ring

People often want to know why a custom engagement ring costs what it does.
They’re really wondering: “How much does a custom engagement ring cost in Melbourne?”
They rarely ask directly, but the question is always there — hovering politely.
So let’s break it down.
Design
You're not paying for a CAD render. You're paying for someone to listen to what you want and help you make decisions you’d never have known to make. Claw shape, stone orientation, how the band meets the setting, ring profile, finish, side details, gallery size — none of it is random, and none of it is easy without a guiding hand.
Design isn’t decoration. It’s structure, proportion, restraint.
You’re paying for guidance in tasteful decision making.
Stones
We don’t use leftover stones. We don’t choose gems because they’re 'affordable'. Every gem is sourced for the job. If we show you three sapphires, it’s because we’ve rejected thirty. We see plenty of dark blue Australian sapphires, but we’re always looking for mid blues, green-blues, parti sapphires, and bicolour gems.
We’re not necessarily looking for 'perfect' — we’re looking for bright, beautiful stones full of colour.
We’ve built strong relationships with some of the best gemstone dealers in Australia, and this is reflected in our gem collection.
The sourcing is part of the design. You’re not just buying a sapphire.
You’re buying the choice behind it.
Craft
All of our work is made by our in-house jewellers, Eva and Yznick.
No factories. No shortcuts. If something’s not right, it gets redone. That might not matter to everyone — but it matters to us.
Every claw is shaped by hand. Every polish is checked under the loupe.
A lot of the labour happens in micro-millimetres.
We’re a tiny business. We give each job proportionally more attention than larger jewellery houses with more staff and more streamlined workflows.
Time
Most of the time spent on your ring won’t be visible in the final piece.
Sketches, stone trials, client notes, CAD edits, 3D prints, casting, clean-up, setting, polish. All of it matters, even if you don’t see it.
It’s not quick.
It’s not automated.
It’s not meant to be.
Cost
When you pay $4,500 for a ring, it doesn’t mean we’re pocketing $4,500.
You're covering materials, labour, sourcing, admin, packaging, couriers, studio rent. You’re paying for our goldsmith, our stone dealer, our time. You’re paying for revisions, delays, decisions.
You’re paying for the right people to care about your build.
