YONAGUNI MONUMENT

For our exhibition ISLANDS IN BLOOM, taking place 17-18 May, we are creating three men's rings inspired by the Yonaguni Monument —a mysterious underwater formation often described as Japan's Atlantis.

Discovered in 1986, the Yonaguni Monument has sparked global fascination. Some believe this underwater formation off the coast of Okinawa is a man-made structure from a pre-Ice Age civilisation. Its angular terraces and towering forms continue to captivate divers and archaeology enthusiasts alike.

Marine geologist Masaaki Kimura claims that the formations are man-made stepped monoliths. These claims have been described as pseudoarchaeological.Kimura first estimated that the formation must be at least 10,000 years old, dating it to a period when it would have been above water, and therefore surmised that the site may be a remnant of the mythical lost continent of Mu.

Our new ring was carved by hand to delineate the steps and tessellated rock formations of the Yonaguni Monument. Some of the rings for the exhibition will feature Australian sapphires that were custom cut for us for this project.
