MORNING GLORY RING — 朝顔 (あさがお) リング

The Morning Glory ring (朝顔, あさがお) is part of our Islands in Bloom collection for Melbourne Design Week 2025. Inspired by the delicate, spiralling form of the Okinawan 朝顔 (morning glory) flower, this piece captures the fleeting beauty of a bloom unfurling in the early light.

At its centre is a luminous recrystallised emerald, secured not by traditional claws but by finely hand-carved 18K yellow gold leaves. Each leaf is sculpted with precision, curving naturally around the stone to create a setting that feels organic, graceful, and full of movement. This design merges structure and ornament into a seamless, living form.

Recrystallised emeralds are genuine emeralds — chemically and structurally identical to natural mined emeralds — created through an innovative recycling process.

These stones are made by taking small fragments of natural Colombian emerald (often offcuts or material too small for use) and carefully fusing them under heat and pressure to form a new, larger crystal. This process transforms what would otherwise be discarded into a brilliant, unified gemstone, preserving the beauty and integrity of emerald while reducing waste.

Unlike synthetic emeralds, which are grown entirely in a lab from raw chemical components, recrystallised emeralds begin as natural material. The result is a sustainable, ethically conscious gemstone with the same rich colour and composition as mined emerald — but made with a lighter environmental footprint.
