YONAGUNI RING – 与那国島海底地形リング
We designed YONAGUNI RING for our exhibition Islands in Bloom, part of Melbourne Design Week 2025.
This piece draws inspiration from the so called Yonaguni Monument. Discovered in 1986 off the coast of Okinawa and often described as "Japan's Atlantis," the formation's angular terraces and towering forms have drawn divers and archaeology enthusiasts ever since.
Marine geologist Masaaki Kimura claims the formations are man-made stepped monoliths, at least 10,000 years old — dating from a time when the site stood above water — and possibly a remnant of the mythical lost continent of Mu. Many academics dismiss this as pseudoarchaeology; the true origin of the Yonaguni Monument remains unsolved.
The YONAGUNI RING is an original carving, cut by hand to delineate the steps and tessellated rock formations of the monument. A strong, architectural silhouette — each facet recalling stone shaped by time and water.
